I picked up Quake because it came bundled with Quake II, a game I remember far more fondly from my childhood. Having now spent time with both again, it’s clear why Quake II stuck with me more. While Quake is perfectly fine, it feels like a game I appreciate more for its place in history and the nostalgia it brings than for how enjoyable it is to replay today.

Originally developed by id Software, Quake is the genre-defining dark fantasy first-person shooter that helped shape modern FPS design. The Nintendo Switch release presents an authentic yet enhanced version of the original 1996 classic, preserving its oppressive atmosphere while modernising its presentation for contemporary hardware.
Players take on the role of Ranger, a lone warrior armed with a brutal arsenal, battling through four corrupted dimensions filled with grotesque enemies, medieval fortresses, military installations, and hellish dungeons. The objective is simple and relentless: survive, collect powerful runes, and destroy an ancient evil threatening reality itself.
