I bought High On Life for one very simple reason, I like Rick and Morty. The humour has the same chaotic energy, plenty of talking guns, ridiculous characters, and jokes flying at you every few seconds. If that’s your kind of thing, you’ll probably feel right at home.
At its core, it’s a fairly straightforward first-person shooter. The combat is fun without ever becoming especially difficult, making it an easy game to pick up and play. New weapons gradually unlock, each with their own personality and abilities, which helps keep things fresh throughout the adventure.
Where the game stumbled for me was navigation. There was far more backtracking than I expected, and I spent a surprising amount of time simply trying to work out how to get back to where I needed to be. One particular point halfway through the game has your character take a nap, after which the world shifts to night. It looks great atmospherically, but it also makes everything so dark that finding your way around becomes even more frustrating.
The comedy is exactly what I expected going in. It made me laugh plenty of times, especially early on, but by the second half the constant chatter and repeated style of jokes started to wear a little thin.
One thing I will say is this definitely isn’t a game to play in public. The amount of swearing is relentless. My son simply refers to it as “the sweary game,” which meant it wasn’t exactly ideal for filling the time while waiting outside dance classes. If you’re wearing headphones in the living room that’s one thing, but blasting this out in a waiting room is another entirely.
I finished the game feeling like I’d had a good time. It doesn’t reinvent the first-person shooter, and it has its fair share of navigational frustrations, but the quirky world, memorable weapons and light-hearted gameplay make it an enjoyable ride.
Humanity has become the latest target of an intergalactic alien cartel, and it’s up to you to fight back. Armed with a collection of wise-cracking talking guns, you’ll travel across bizarre alien worlds, hunt dangerous bounties, battle eccentric enemies, and take on the ruthless G3 cartel.
Combining fast-paced first-person shooting with exploration, upgrades, and a heavy dose of irreverent humour, High On Life delivers a colourful sci-fi adventure that’s as strange as it is entertaining.
