I do not normally bother with breakfast at a hotel. I usually grab a quick coffee on the way into work and get on with the day, but this morning I decided to treat myself. A proper sit-down breakfast. How civilised. What could possibly go wrong?
I got to the restaurant and was told I could not have coffee for twenty minutes because they had not cleaned the machine the night before. Twenty minutes. At breakfast. For coffee. I did not have twenty minutes to sit around waiting for someone to complete yesterday’s cleaning, so I was forced to eat breakfast completely unsupported by caffeine. Frankly, I am amazed I survived.
I was given food, certainly, but I reject the suggestion that this counted as breakfast. Breakfast without coffee is just eating unusually early in the day. I tried to do something nice for myself and was rewarded with eggs, disappointment and a deep sense of betrayal. Next time I’ll stick to grabbing a coffee on the way in. At least then I know I’m actually getting breakfast.
