Runtar’s Diary: The Nicest Prison I’ve Ever Escaped From

Getting arrested worked remarkably well.

We arrived in the city above expecting a prison cell. Instead, we were taken to a beautiful white-stone building full of guards, fresh fruit and a very friendly man called Jonas.

Jonas seemed confused about why we were prisoners.

I told him I didn’t think I should be wearing magical shackles.

He agreed, stuck a pen in the lock and somehow opened them.

I encouraged him first, so I shall be taking partial credit.

We then asked if we could step outside for a smoke.

He let us.

So we left.

I’m beginning to think the vampires need to review their prison procedures.

The city itself wasn’t what we’d expected. Everything is clean. There are gardens, fountains and healthy people everywhere. Clerics magically create food, and the people willingly send some of it down to those living below.

More worrying was the symbol on their churches.

Caleb’s eye.

The same god whose followers trapped Oriel beneath that well.

That makes it difficult for me to believe everything here is as kind as it appears.

We found an inn away from the centre, Daisy gave us our equipment back, and Baw got the remaining shackles open.

Then Daisy made himself look like an ordinary citizen and went to investigate one of Caleb’s churches.

He discovered they provide the city’s food in exchange for blood donations, which apparently feed the vampires. Everyone knows about it. Everyone seems happy with the arrangement.

Daisy even tried to join the church.

They weren’t interested.

So we’ve escaped prison, found somewhere to hide, and discovered that the supposedly terrible city above is currently one of the nicest places we’ve visited.

Which is inconvenient.

I was much more prepared for evil vampires.

Love,
